If you didn’t already know, I wrote two books. And I wrote them in less than two months.

Yep two 40,000 word novels written in less than two months. To some that may not be a lot and to others that may be a ton of writing. But to me, it just proved that when you’re motivated enough to finish something you’ll finish it. Or when you have a written goal, you get it done.

And that’s what I did. I got myself so motivated that I wrote and wrote until I finished them. The first one was an accomplishment enough, but the second one made me feel like a writing queen.

How did I do it, you may ask? Honestly, looking back I sometimes have no idea. But then I remember it all boiled down to motivation and how motivated I was to do this.

Today I want to share with all my lovely readers 10 tips on how to get motivated to write. Whether you’re writing a novel or you’re even just writing a blog post, sometimes it’s hard to write anything down at all. I’m sharing with you how I was able to keep motivated enough to write 2 novels in less than 2 months.

10 Tips to Get Motivated to Write

1. Find your passion

This is probably the first and most important tip to get yourself motivated to do anything in life really. Find what you are passionate about. So take a moment or day to find what you truly want in your life and in your writing. Once you find what you are passionate about, take that and use that fuel to jump-start your writing.

2. Make a great music playlist

For me, music really motivates me. In almost anything. But it has to be the right type of music in that situation to motivate me. So think about the type of music that really pumps you up to write or work on things. It may be different from your motivational workout songs. I have both a writing playlist and a workout playlist. And they both have very different songs. For some reason, 2000s emo/alternative songs make me motivated to write for hours on end. But that’s my writing playlist, make sure to create your own. Feel what type of music resonates with you when you write and add that to your playlist.

3. Make time to do something fun

I can sometimes be a person who does all work and no play. But that’s just with any business person. But sometimes you need to make time for something fun. Take an hour or two watch a TV show, go to the movies, take a walk, cook something. But make the time for these fun activities, and make sure you do it at least once a day. Because once you get back to your writing you will be refreshed and refueled and you can become a writing machine.

4. Make a vision board

I have one above my desk. It has pictures, it has quotes, it has the word dream that I bought at Michael’s one year a long time ago. But have one. And constantly add to it and then put it somewhere you can see it every day. Because there is nothing more motivating than seeing a board filled with what your future self will have and look like.

5. Set a dated goal

Sometimes you need a little push to get motivated. And a goal with a date can be that motivation. I used to work in the news field where deadlines were an everyday thing. But you know what, those deadlines motivated me to get shit done. And I did. I got a lot done with a deadline. Now I’m not saying you should push yourself to finish writing a whole novel in a week, you can if you really feel that you can do it, but I mean set a realistic goal with a date on it and put it somewhere you can see it every day. That date will help push and motivate you to keep writing and to keep on pushing through.

6. When you feel it, take it and run with it

And with all these being said, when you feel it, you have take it and run with it. There are some days I felt more motivated than others to write. So you know what I did on those days, I took it and ran with it, for miles. When I felt the writing bug hit me, I didn’t hesitate to run with it. I had days where I wrote more than 10,000 words in a day because when I felt it, I went with it. So trust your body and listen to yourself. Because when you truly listen to yourself you can accomplish so much.

7. Talk to people

And it doesn’t have to be a face to face talk, talk with someone over the phone or message some of your online buddies. Get in a facebook group and chat away with some people. Just start up conversations. Nothing is more motivating than talking with people whether in person or online and getting advice from them. It’s motivating to read or listen to other people’s success stories, so go out there and talk with people. Interact, it never hurts to interact with more people.

8. Cancel all the bullshit

You know that voice in your head telling you that your writing sucks. And don’t act like you’ve never had that because everyone has these moments. Well, it’s time to cancel it out of your mind. Stop the bullshit and stop listening to the can’ts, don’ts and won’ts. Once you put yourself in a positive and uplifting mindset it will help motivate you to write some powerful things and not just in writing but in your everyday life. So it’s time to cancel all the bullshit and make shit happen.

9. Read

I recommend at least reading one chapter from any book of your choosing a day. It will help jumpstart your writing and really fuel your creative soul. Take an hour and read something you want to read or just read a chapter. Just read something. Reading helps motivate me into writing because it fuels the creative juices in my brain to start writing the awesome stuff I want to write.

10. Have fun

Lastly, have fun when you write. Writing isn’t for everyone, but it is something everyone does on a day to day basis. Whether it’s little notes or full-on novels, you need to enjoy what you’re writing. Have a little fun with it. Take a minute or two to write a silly paragraph before diving back into writing about quantum physics or something fun. But remember to have fun with it, having fun is probably one of the greatest motivators for almost anything you do with your life. So I suggest you start having fun today.

There you have it. Those are my 10 tips on how to get motivated to write. I hope you take at least one of these tips and run like the wind with your writing. All it takes is persistence and motivation and you can be well on your way to writing your first or twentieth novel.
