Big Bear

Hello all my awesome friends and fellow travelers, I am still reporting here in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and life has been busy and great. I finally have the blogging bug once again. But I’ve been so busy with life that it’s been hard to be consistent with this blog, but now that I have a grasp at my current adjustements of life I will finally post all the awesome places that you should all know about and see!

I will be traveling back to my hometown of San Diego to a mountain town that is an awesome getaway for everyone.

Fun on the Alpine Slide

When you live in sunny-all-year-long San Diego, sometimes it’s nice to get away and visit a place where it can actually get a bit chilly with a chance of snow. (Now that I’m in South Dakota, I will be getting this a lot more now!)

For us San Diegans (or former), Big Bear, California is the place to go during its winter season to actually experience a winter season (well one of many of course, but this is the closest). While on my latest trip to Big Bear there wasn’t any snow, the temperatures were able to get less than 30 degrees Fahrenheit and be at a high of only 50 degrees. That beats the high 80s that we were already experiencing in San Diego.

Usually Big Bear is known for its mountains to snow board and ski. I learned at Big Bear Mountain and I love snowboarding. But it’s not just a snowboard and ski town (even though you’ll be seeing about a bunch of snowboard and ski shops at every corner).

Alex and I just wanted a nice getaway and enjoy the fresh mountain air during our last trip to Big Bear without the ache-y and sore feeling you get after snowboarding for the day. So we decided to try out this place called the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain.

Lift

This place is near Big Bear Lake and it’s a fun place to bring your whole family. They offer a snow play section where you can go inner tubing on some man-made (sometimes fresh) snow and even go-karting and play golf.

We decided to try out another attraction they have called the Alpine Slide. For $6 a ride per person (or $25 for 5 rides) you get to go up a slightly scary lift and then go down a long slide in a bobsled like manner.

Instead of explaining it completely, how about you experience it first hand with me. Watch the video below of the Alpine Slide.

For big kids like us, this slide was a lot of fun, more fun than what we thought it would be like. And since it was in a bobsled like manner we couldn’t help but keep referencing the 90s Disney Movie called Cool Runnings (Coach, I have to pee… I HATE YOU. I HATE YOUUUUU).

Not going to lie, some parts of the ride are scary, but most of it was tons of fun and a bit of a thrill. You do have full control of how fast and slow you can go, so you don’t have to worry too much about whether this is the attraction for you. So no matter your age, you should check out this little gem at Big Bear. I’d actually love to go once again right now.

  1. Oh my gosh. This looks SO fun!! And kind of terrifying, too. I’m from Southern California too (LA & OC). I’ve only been to Big Bear for ziplining once. I had no idea this existed. If I ever go again, I’m definitely going to do this!!! And I used to love that movie, Cool Runnings, haha!

    • It is quite terrifying at first, I go super slow at first ’cause I was def. scared lol And Ziplining! I did that once in Colorado, no idea they had it there, I’d have to check it out next time! And yes, Cool Runnings was such an awesome movie, totally felt like that when I was on this bobsled slide.

  2. I did this exact thing when I was younger in Colorado! Even though I’m afraid of heights, it was so much fun!!! This looks like a good time and if I ever make my way to Big Bear definitely something I will look up!
